Some dogs develop a chewing habit. Others only chew as a last resort boredom response.

While all dogs destroy what they chew with their sharp pointy teeth, destructive chewing is a term to describe chewing that is focused on your treasured possessions, rather than on your puppies toys.

Why puppies chew

1. Chewing can be fun and tasty, depending on what is being chewed on

2. Chewing gives a nervous, bored or lonely pup an emotional release

3. Chewing burns up energy when your dog is not getting enough exercise

How to train puppy out of destructive chewing

Be prepared to spend time and effort on getting the result you want for your puppies training

Take charge – dog proof your home as you would for a toddler. Anything you don’t want your dog to chew must be out of her reach.

Tempting items like food or food scraps should be cleaned up and cleared away securely.

Ensure there are no demarcation disputes between you and your dog. Her toys must never be your cast off shoes or towels if you want her to stay away from shoes and towels currently in use by you and your family.

Make sure for your puppies training she has 2 or 3 chewable dog toys to play with every day. Rotate these items to avoid boredom.

Supervise your puppies play time with her chew toys, especially in the early stages. She will test her boundaries and you should be there when she does.

When the inevitable mistakes happen, make a loud noise or “uh uh” sound then straight away offer your puppy the dog appropriate human sanctioned chew toy. As soon as she accepts it, make a big fuss of her. She’ll catch on very quickly.

Be realistic, expect a few errors and stay positive, both in your own mindset and how to train puppy and you will have a good result.
