Our westie puppy gets VERY playful and bites our feet which really hurts. We shout or scream which doesn’t do any good against the puppy biting . He just gets a bit out of control with the biting. Would rewarding with treats if he leaves our feet or hands work, or will he associate biting with getting a treat?
Just say “No” in a calm assertive voice and your biting puppy should listen; if not put him in a time out situation as an effective method for how to train puppy.

Shouting or screaming doesn't do anything. Say NO and put him in time out right away (in a cage, or a blocked off area) until he calms down. Do it repeatedly, it'll take a while, but he'll learn that biting and playing don't exist together in your house.

Make sure that he does have other toys to chew on around the house, too.

u shouldnt give ur puppy a treat after he was bitting u because then ur puppy will think thats a right thing to do. everytime ur puppy bites u say no in a commanding way and if he or she stops then praise him or her.

    hope i helped

I have a Westie, too, and he could be quite a handful when he was a puppy. To stop the biting, whenever he gives you a nip, you have to give a really loud, sharp yelp (much as his littermates would do if he bit them). And then you IGNORE him. This is the worst thing you can do to a puppy – no more play! Stand up, turn away, cross your arms over your chest and avoid eye contact. Once he calms down, it's back to play! Give him lots of praise and rubs, and soon he'll learn that nipping only gets him ignored, but being a good puppy gets him lots of attention!

my lab/heeler mix always bit at our feet, one day i was running an he grabbed my shoe an he ripped out one of his baby teeth, so it can be harmful for them, we told him no, he hated being yelled at an he learned very quick, try squirting him with water when he does bite. when he plays nice keep playing with him, an when he bites at your hands immediatly stop playing with him an he will realize that when he does that he loses his play mate. it may take a while but thats what the pros say to do. good luck an i hope this helps

When he starts to bite, spray Bittler Apple (available at any local pet store) on your hands or feet.
Also, you put your thumb in the dogs mouth and press lightly on the inside, bottom part of the dogs jaw, they HATE that and it does not hurt them.
You can also try holding their mouth shut and say "no" but sometimes it gets them angry and they bite even more. Try a few different things but don't award with treats or they will bite just for one!

You may wish to view some websites written by behavioral experts:

handling this incorrectly can lead to aggression and/or hard mouth problems later

replace your hand with a dog toy….

when he tries to teeth on your hand say "no!" firmly first and replace hand with toy….

My dog is now ten and when she was a puppy we allowed her to play bite us and pull on out clothes ect….now that shes all grown up shes vicious!!!

Be sure to train your puppy while u have the chance!

a loud yelp every time he bites you, and stop play.

puppy cant distinguish between posative and negative attention properly so shouting at the will not work.

if he continues with the biting after you have made the yelp put him into another room untill he has colmed down, then go and praise him and start to play if you wish. it will be a very repetative process before he learns.

also bear in mind a dogs natural instinct is to bite its play mates, its a way of setting authority and establishing bonds within the pack in nature. always make sure you are the one to end the play.

also try distracting his attention from your hands and feet with toys.
